Pub Of The Week: The Joseph Bramah, Barnsley

Joseph Bramah

Joseph Bramah

It’s a bit like Dr Who’s Tardis, is the Bramah in Barnsley.

The size is extraordinarily deceptive. There’s a small door to the rear (a conversion from a Victoria building) and a rather modern one to the front. And, in between, a main bar that goes between the two, and which seems to stretch forever, with another large bar area to one side. Upstairs (yes, this pub actually has an upstairs) there’s another pair of bars, and a long seating area with deep and comfortable couches.

On my visit, the Bramah was in the middle of one of their regular beer festivals, so the range of ales from all over the world was eye-boggling – and very tempting. Among the Brit beers, Bateman’s Harvest and Adnam’s Fisherman, and a couple of pints of Belgium’s Steenbrugge Blond went down a treat.Y ou could have had a very agreeable traditional fish and chips and a pint, and have a penny change from a fiver.

Mr Bramah must be smiling on the place. He was born a Bramma, and changed his name later, after walking to London to seek work. He became one of the foremost engineers of his time and is regarded as the father of hydraulic engineering. He was a prolific inventor, and received no less than 18 patents by the time he died.

Parking isn’t brilliant (this is the town centre after all) but there is a generously-sized beer garden to the rear, and the whole place has a nicely relaxed atmosphere, and it’s a happily mixed clientele. Efficient, well-run, and comfy. Do you need more?

Phil Penfold.
