Pub Of The Week: The Horseshoe Inn, Levisham

Brothers Charles and Toby Wood run this handsome pantile-roofed 19th century pub which stands at the very top of the village looking down the broad street and immaculately kept verges.

There’s a warm welcome in the traditional bar with oak floors, exposed stone walls and open fires crackling away on chilly days, and a menu to match.

Meat comes from the award-winning Radfords Butcher at Sleights – why not start with black pudding wrapped in bacon with sautéed potatoes and apple sauce, followed perhaps with duck breast on sweet potato mash with port and red wine sauce?

If you’d like something lighter, there’s a good sandwich menu (the likes of sugar baked ham, roast beef and horseradish) which might hit the spot; either way, sit back with the paper and a pint of Black Sheep or Monkman’s Slaughter from Cropton Brewery.

There are several good walks from the door, and just a mile down the – steep but spectacular – lane and the North Yorks Moors steam train stops at Levisham Station – jump aboard and ride to Pickering and back for a grand day out.

If you fancy making a night of it, there are a handful of comfortable, immaculate bedrooms over the shop.

The Horseshoe Inn, Levisham: Open all day from 11am. Lunch 12-2pm, dinner 6-8.30pm.
