Pub Of The Week: Wheatsheaf Inn, Egton, Whitby

After a bracing yomp on the North York Moors (or even a gentle stroll on a beach) there are few better places to fetch up than here; Egton is a brief hop from Whitby, and one of a handful of pretty inland villages that tend to get forgotten in the rush to get to the seaside.

This handsome, pantiled roof pub is long, low and set back off the road, with a grassed area out front to enjoy the sunshine on a good day. There’s real warmth in the welcome from Nigel and Elaine.

Inside, a fabulous snug with a proper range (fight with farmers, fishermen and various locals for a place here at this time of year), a comfortable bar with glowing oak settles where you can eat and a slightly more formal, beamed dining room with another roaring fire. Fishing paraphernalia is everywhere, some of it on the very appealing menu.

There’s wholetail Whitby scampi and queenie scallops, and Elaine’s amazing fish pie, freighted with seafood, a delight. She’s also pretty masterful with meat, and if braised oxtail is on the menu, go for it.

Pub classics include steak and mulled wine pie with a suet herb crust (12.50) and the winningly named Big Tart, caramelised onion layered with goats cheese on puff pastry with fries & side salad (8.50).

I always think of the Wheatsheaf as an inclement weather pub; it’s great to pull up by the fire with a pint of Tim Taylor Landlord and a plate of wholesome food in front of you. And if you have one over the eight, above the shop are two elegant, beamed bedrooms with fabulously big beds on which to lay your weary bones.
