This award-winning self-build offers a rare chance to buy a striking, contemporary home in historic York.

The property, which won a Local Authority Building Control Excellence Award for its design, construction and craftsmanship, was conceived by Crease Strickland Parkins architects.

It is built on a kite-shaped site with a frontage that reflects the Arts and Crafts style of its neighbours. At the rear, it is unashamedly 21st century with extensive use of glazing.

The south-facing, glazed garden room has large, overhanging, zinc-faced eaves that, together with the balconies, help provide shade from the sun.

Owner Ian MacBeth bought the plot ten years ago with the dream of building a “grand design” and work started in 2008.

He says: “The idea was to have a contemporary, family home that took full advantage of the south-facing aspect at the rear. Inside, we wanted as much open-plan space as possible on the ground floor. Fortunately, it got a unanimous ‘okay’ from the planners.”

Thanks to the glazing, the house is full of natural light and high levels of insulation make it energy efficient. The interiors were designed by David Long Designs of York.

The property has a double-height reception hall with a brushed steel and walnut staircase, a cloakroom, communications room and internal access to the garage. The principal living areas include a kitchen, a sitting room opening to the garden room and a dining room, which has a double-sided wood burning stove. The ground floor also has a spa opening onto the sun room.

On the first floor, there is a sitting room, a study, a principal bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and three further bedrooms with en-suites. On the second floor, there is a fifth bedroom/hobbies room.

The property has a smart lighting system, an integrated music system and underfloor heating.

Outside, there is a private parking area and tandem garage, gardens with a spectacular oak tree, a granite patio area, water features and a garden shed.
