When the award-winning Sylvan development was built in Malton 13 years ago it caused a sensation.
The four properties were hailed as futuristic, leading the local paper to declare: “the 21st century has arrived in the traditional market town of Malton”.
Designed by Bramhall Blenkharn architects for a forward-thinking female developer, the contemporary homes proved their worth when they won a prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects award.
In a secluded position on sought-after Middlecave Road, they rarely come on the market, which is why the sale of Walnut House has caused such a stir.
Owners John and Tanya Hawkins bought it from new after being bowled over by the design.
“I walked in and thought it was incredibly cool. I am quite impulsive so I put an offer in there and then,” says John, who runs an independent Porsche dealership. “I have never regretted it. It is a fantastic place to live. The building is steel framed with a very high spec. and it is full of light.”
Over the years, the couple have regularly updated the interior and have just replaced the boiler. They have also landscaped the garden and installed outdoor lighting and water features.
The art work, including the collectable pop art pictures of the Kray twins, was commissioned for the space. The Harley Davidson motorbike, hand-built by Orange County Choppers, is a standout feature in the hallway.
“We are happy to leave all the furniture and art and even the Harley for the new owner, by negotiation. It was all bought for this house and won’t suit our next home,” says John.
He and Tanya are selling to move to an old chapel they have renovated.“We decided to have a complete change and move to an old property in a village but we will miss this place. It’s been a wonderful home that’s just a five minute walk into town,” he says.
