Art project creates a sense of community in urban jungle
What is city regeneration and a gardening weekend doing on the art page?
It's a good question. It turns out the Urban Gardening Weekend being held as part of the regeneration of Holbeck Urban Village in South Leeds has art literally at its centre.
Wonderwood is an art installation which will be based at the Round Foundry for the next three months.
The installation is being launched this weekend with an Urban Gardening Weekend. The idea is to turn the south of the city, a decidedly urban landscape, into something greener.
Leeds City Council and the Arts Council have commissioned The Culture Company and Amenity Space, which is described as an artists-architectural firm, to come up with an art installation as part of the regeneration of Holbeck.
A spokesman said: "It is a fun woodland clearing with a fantastical tree and bell tower, based at the Round Foundry development for the next three months.
"Wonderwood will provide an urban idyll; somewhere to sit and watch the world go by or meet up with friends, it can also be used for events by members of the public."
While the art installation will be in place for three months, a series of events take place this weekend to launch the project.
The Urban Gardening weekend will see a total of 17 activities, demonstrations and free workshops take place to inspire visitors to transform the urban landscape into a greener habitat. Workshops include today a gardening expert showing workers how to make their office spaces greener and artists helping children create their own garden masterpieces.
The weekend will also see the winner of the recent Wildlife Habitat Design Competition announced and there also will be a display of the shortlisted entries in local bars and cafs around the Holbeck village area.
