Big is beautiful
Ain't nobody like disco diva Chaka Khan when it comes to showing how to pulsate with glamour and sexiness, making the most of all her curves and not allowing age to wither one tiny little bit.
In fact, as she takes to the stage with Lulu and Anastacia for their Here Come The Girls nationwide tour, stopping at Sheffield City Hall on November 26 and Hull City Hall on December 18, Chaka, 56, demonstrates that she is more fabulous than ever.
And to prove it, she has collaborated with Evans, modelling its Christmas party collection which launches this week, showing off a head-to-toe, high-glamour look including glitzy all-over sequin tunics, high shimmer leggings, black suede over-the-knee boots and oversized statement accessories for extra Christmas bling. It's available in Evans stores (size 14 plus) and on-line throughout November and December.
"Evans make clothes that are comfortable, slimming and multi-faceted," Chaka says. "You can dress up or down and still look fab. Evans make clothes for girls who have backs and racks."
Meanwhile, online is the best place to try if you are looking both for plus-size partywear and for clothing designed for women of all sizes who don't like to show off too much flesh, but still want to look chic and sexy.
The Fifty Plus website (www.fiftyplus.co.uk) has collections of stylish, contemporary pieces, in sizes 12-34 with selected styles up to 36 and trousers, skirts and dresses in different lengths, plus shoes and boots in sizes 4-9 and width fittings standard-EEE, with boots in a choice of calf fittings. This season there are some glorious party dresses, all designed to flatter the curvier woman. A couple of tips on accessories: remember that a well-chosen shrug (see Six of the Best) or a pashmina can turn that skimpy frock into a sexy but forgiving party dress. Fuller figures should aim for chunkier, statement footwear (platforms are perfect, as are ankle boots).
Statement jewellery is another great way of drawing attention from the parts of your body you don't like, and don't forget that the bigger the bag, the smaller you will look. So go on – be bold and be proud. Repeat to yourself Chaka's declaration: "I'm Every Woman."
