Boeing Boeing - Sheffield Lyceum
KIM Watson caught the opening night of Marc Camoletti's comedy at the Sheffield Lyceum, which is due to run at York's Theatre Royal from February 24 to 28 2009. Here is her review:
"The stars of Boeing Boeing took to the stage at Sheffield's Lyceum on Monday, the first day of their week-long run in the city as part of a UK tour. This hysterical show has taken audiences by storm since its opening in London's West End in 2007 and is still going strong.
"Boeing Boeing, set in the 1960s, follows lead character Bernard (Martin Marquez of Hotel Babylon and Waking the Dead), an architect living in Paris, as he juggles his life to fit in his three air stewardess fiances.
"His Welsh cousin Robert comes to visit and is at first bewildered by his hectic life but soon becomes involved in the shenanigans.
"Bernard thinks he has it all worked out as he studies their flight plans meticulously but, as the flights begin to overlap, trouble ensues.
"The cousins work well together, bouncing off each other, in this funny and chaotic play. It is all set in Bernard's living room, and as the girls start arriving it is one door opening followed by another closing in classic West End farce.
"Sarah Jayne Dunn (Mandy from Hollyoaks) is just one of a cast of well-known TV stars. She plays Gloria, Bernard's American stewardess. The cast also included Thaila Zucchi (Skins, Love Soup) as his Italian lover, Gabriella and Susie Blake (Coronation Street) as his long suffering maid. But for many the greatest character was the German stewardess, Gretchen, played by Josephine Butler. Her bellowing Teutonic voice and Wagnerian presence on stage was captivating and the funniest to watch.
"The audience sat in wait for the three girls to eventually collide with each other and when they do, the cousins still manage to slip their way out of it in the best scene of the show.
"It all works out in the end (I won't spoil that for you!) and the show finishes with a 'cha cha cha' which is the perfect ending to a play that is fun, lively and great to escape into for a couple of hours.
"Boeing Boeing is a colourful, kitsch, quirky and downright funny play that will welcome you aboard and take you on a journey away from the cold streets of Sheffield."
