Get noticed with stripes inspired by Paul Smith
Paul Smith's stripy designs are always attention-grabbing and fun. At the same time, he knows when to tone it down and play it simple by having his trademark stripes less obvious but still noticeable when you look closely.
Stripes are a great way to add interest to an otherwise ordinary room – best of all, like Paul Smith, you can choose to be over the top and extravagant or a little more held back.
If you're fun-loving and brave then why not go all out and create a room that can't fail to put a smile on your face? Begin with a really blank canvas – white walls and a plain wooden floor.
Then section off stripes on one wall using masking tape – don't worry about making these the same size, as varying sizes will look best. If you're not very confident about picking colours, then all you need is plenty of paint colour cards and a pair of scissors.
Cut out any colours you like and then see which ones go together well. Once you've decided, you can get painting and create a bright feature wall. Now to add in some furniture! You don't want the room completely covered in stripes or things will look a little bit too mad. Instead, stick to maybe one main stripy item like a chest or sofa or some stripy cushions on a plain sofa.
The Dolce Vita two-drawer chest is one of my favourite items of furniture. It's available from.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk and is ideal due to the fact it's covered in delicious stripes.
If you'd rather go down the stripy sofa route then the Wolfgang is definitely the choice for you. It's a show stopper that will work well alongside the bright colour scheme. Again, this is available from Barker and Stonehouse. Keep everything else in the room as plain as possible – use white to make the colours you have used stand out. The Cariton coffee table is glossy, white and modern in design. It will hold its place in a vivid room without fighting for attention. So that's how to create a fun and funky striped room. It's bound to put a smile on your face.
