How to get your home shipshape for summer
Paul Smith publishes a book called You Can Find Inspiration in Everything – (And If You Can't, Look Again). Well, if you are all at sea in deciding how to decorate your home for the summer months, I'd suggest you take a look in some glossy magazines and browse the shop windows along the high street just now.
Any designer that's worth their salt knows that spring/summer means nautical – not just for fashion but for homeware too. This year's nautical trend has a vintage feel to it and, best of all, you get to use lots of Union Jack cushions which are super-trendy.
If you're no stranger to trawling through antique shops, then you'll be a pro at getting this look right. All it takes is a few new items, some white paint and a few vintage-style accessories. First stop is Barker and Stonehouse (visit www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk for a list of stores or to buy online) have a look at the Haddon trunk which will set the foundations for the whole look.
To keep it looking trendy, add in some modern touches like a plain white sofa and possibly the Gladstone Tall Chest – also from Barker and Stonehouse.
Now its time to get looking for those little items that will make the room. www. nauticalinteriors.com has plenty of items from boats to beds. And don't forget to collect shells when you next visit the beach. You can use these really creatively. For example – purchase a plain picture frame and glue on the shells until the frame is covered. This will look gorgeous with your favourite black and white photograph.
I love nauticalinteriors.com Lifebuoy cushion which look perfect combined with the Union Jack cushions from the Barker and Stonehouse accessories department. If you still want to add more nautical memorabilia then there are plenty of websites to check out. Try Seaweed andsand.com and also pebblestosand.co.uk for a really mixed bag of nautical treats.
Finally, get on eBay to see if you can find a great sea-themed rug to top off the whole look.
The best thing about the nautical look is that it's really laid back and relaxing ready for those hazy summer months.
