Jazz Preview: Summer season is set to get into full swing
There is invariably a jazz thread running through Harrogate International Festival and the tradition is maintained by Roberto Fonseca on Sunday and Clare Teal on Wednesday.
Both concerts are at the Royal Hall. Fonseca is a Cuban pianist who was first noticed internationally when he toured with the Buena Vista Social Club. Seen as the natural successor to fellow countrymen like Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba he is playing a key role in revitalising latin jazz.
Given that this is the county of her birth, Teal can be sure of a warm Yorkshire welcome for a show which will feature material from her new album Live at Ebenezer Chapel. The Cleethorpes Jazz Festival, which begins tonight at Lucarly's in Humberston, replaces the Beachcomber event which has been held in September for nine years. Dave Newton, Dave O'Higgins, Tim Kliphuis, Tom Cawley's Curios, Jim Hart's Gemini and Liz Fletcher are in an appealing programme which deserves to give the festival a successful debut in its new life. Barb Jungr, whose three-week appearance at New York's Caf Carlyle earlier this year earned enthusiastic reviews, appears in the Hebden Bridge Festival at the Ted Hughes Theatre tonight with her show Tell It Like It Is.
A witty and intelligent performer who expresses her beliefs through song, Jungr will dip into the work of the likes of Eric Bogle, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Cat Stevens in exploring the impact and effects of war.
I was saddened to learn of the death of Dick Hawdon. I first knew Dick when he played trumpet with the Yorkshire Jazz Band in the Fifties, eventually leading to a distinguished reign as head of jazz at Leeds College of Music. He was a fine musician and a good friend.
