Review: Very Valentine ***
The best-selling author of Big Stone Gap has come up with this charming tale, the first in a trilogy, which introduces Valentine Roncalli, the creative linchpin of an Italian-American family who have run a custom-made wedding shoe company in New York's Greenwich Village since 1903.
Valentine, who learned her craft from her grandmother, is tasked with saving the firm from ruin, entering a shoe-design challenge which could save the company.
In between a promising romance with dashing Italian chef Roman Falconi, she returns to Italy with her grandmother to learn new techniques and seek unique materials for building a pair of glorious shoes to beat all rivals. It's humorous and heart-wrenching, as the various sides of the family throw emotional complications into the mix.
