Review: They Only Come at Night: Visions ****
Alan Lane is artistic director of Slung Low, a theatre company which has been praised as one of the most exciting and innovative in the country. Their work involves a new way of looking at theatre and explaining what it is. They Only Come at Night: Visions, is the fifth incarnation of the show which began in a Bradford car park two years ago.
This version is in Huddersfield this week for its only Yorkshire date. If you are a fan of theatre, if you want to see one of the county's most praiseworthy theatre companies, and if you do not have a weak heart, you need to see this show.
Alan Lane's imagination cannot be contained in the box of a theatre studio, which is why his shows explode out of the walls of a theatre, in this case, onto the streets of Huddersfield and into a secret location. Actors stand on street corners and lurk behind walls, waiting to guide you through the streets to meet the mysterious Quinn.
Once you move inside the secret location, an old warehouse, the tale becomes very, very disturbing. You trail the streets of Huddersfield in groups of three, but once inside the warehouse you don your own headphones and are split up.
Inside the space you are led around, following a trail, meeting occasional visitors and the story unfolds that Quinn is a vampire hunter and you have entered their lair.
It would be unfair to spoil the surprise and say more than that, but Slung Low here have created a piece of work that is part immersive computer game, part theatre, and wholly disturbing. The quality of the acting is phenomenally good. So good that I almost didn't last the course and was on the verge of pulling myself out of the performance.
If you have the nerve to last the distance, it is an exhilarating experience.
