Spa is a taste of paradise on Earth

Stephanie Smith tries out a Yorkshire spa retreat, and highlights autumn beauty events around the region.

You can keep Barbados and the Seychelles. For me, Paradise on Earth is quite simply drifting across a heated pool set in the far less tropical climes of North Yorkshire, the misty steam rising from the clear blue water, up in to the chilly morning air.

Tucked away on the outskirts of Helmsley, Verbena Spa opened at the four-star Feversham Arms Hotel in October last year after a 1.2m investment, and it is definitely for those who prefer their beauty sanctuaries to be homely, rather than all white

and clinical.

The jewels in the crown,

for me, are the aforementioned pool and

the hot tub, also outside, both set in a picturesque little garden in the centre of the hotel.

This is very much country luxe, with iced tea on tap and a relaxing lounge with huge comfy sofas, lots of books and magazines, a caf serving tapas and then seven treatment rooms, including a double (ideal for couples), and a suite including a salt vapour room, aromatherapy room, ice cave, monsoon feature shower and saunarium.

Treatments include the heavenly Lime and Lavender Massage (80 for 75 minutes) and Elemis Visible Brilliance Facial (75) and now, from October 13, Parisian beauty brand Anne Semonin as the new haute couture line which brings a personal and holistic approach to beauty, using only natural ingredients bespoke to each client.

New exclusive signature treatments will include the Verbena Black Sand Exfoliation Experience Massage, Bubbling Mud for Boys, the Royal Miracle Ice Facial and the launch of the

Express Radiance Ice Cubes for the Eyes, part of a new generation of products known as neurocosmetics, which calm the skin's nerve endings and restore natural balance, making it moisturised, cooled and tightened while boosting radiance (and making your make-up stay on for longer).

A half-day package starts at 99.
