New Alan Bennett play set for autumn premiere
Alan Bennett
THE National Theatre has revealed that a new Alan Bennett play, People, will be on stage this autumn.
The news was announced on micro-blogging site Twitter, on which the theatre revealed the name of the play, and the name of the director.
A spokesman for the theatre later said: “All we can say is that People is set to open in the Lyttelton in late October, and will be directed by Nicholas Hytner.”
Although the announcement is low key, it follows a similar pattern to that of Mr Bennett’s last two productions at London’s National Theatre.
The Habit of Art and The History Boys – both also directed by the National’s artistic director, have been massive successes.
The latter was turned into a movie, also directed by Mr Hytner, and was one of the biggest British theatre successes of the last decade. The other good news for Yorkshire theatre fans is that both Mr Bennett’s previous plays toured to the region.
If that trend is anything to go by, it could mean that if People is as big a success as all the elements suggest it might be, even those who don’t get to see it in London might well see it in local theatres in the future.
