Church's best recipes to make cooking a religious experience
"Give us this day our daily bread" takes on a whole new meaning in a new cookery book by some rather unusual chefs.
Loaves, fishes and more features recipes from church leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, and members of the public.
Nine church leaders submitted their recipes for the book including Rowan Williams' ginger biscuits, the general secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain the Rev Jonathan Edwards' salmon with honey sauce and general secretary of the Methodist Church, the Rev Dr Martyn Atkins' banana cake.
Featuring 70 delicious recipes, Loaves, fishes and more is a 128-page fund-raising cookbook devised by insurer Congregational and General, which is endorsed by celebrity chef Kevin Woodford.
It is the first publication of its kind involving some of the UK's key church leaders.
For every book sold a donation will be made to Christian Aid.
Kevin, who has appeared on a number of TV shows including Planet Cook, Ready Steady Cook and Songs of Praise, helped chose the recipes submitted by members of the public to be included in the book as well as offering some of his own.
"Loaves fishes and more is a fantastic fund-raising initiative and I have been delighted to lend my support during its production," says Kevin. "The book contains an eclectic mix of dishes and it's great that so many people took the time to share recipes with us.
"It is a collaboration of favourite family recipes brought together in an easy to follow cookbook and I am sure it will be very popular."
Margaret Slater, marketing manager at Congregational and General, said: "We received a huge number of submissions and are grateful to Kevin Woodford for his time – which he has given freely – for providing some of his own recipes and making the final selections for the book, which we hope will appeal to all cookery enthusiasts."
There are a lot of Yorkshire recipes included in the book such as Philippa Hall from Sheffield's luxury cottage pie and Brian Fox from Haworth's Spanish-style fish stew.
Acclaimed Sheffield chef and restaurateur Richard Smith offers his favourite bread recipes along with some tips on creating the perfect loaf.
"As a chef, restaurateur and keen baker, I love the artisan craft of making fresh bread on a daily basis," says Richard who owns the Artisan and Thyme Cafe
in Sheffield.
"Remember, great bread isn't just made by master bakers. It can be made successfully at home, in domestic ovens or bread makers. As with any baking though, practice makes perfect."
Dr Daleep Mukarji, director of Christian Aid, says: "Flawed global systems and structures – including those of trade, taxation and the responses to climate change – will result in more than a billion people going hungry this year.
"This book's central message of nourishment and sharing is made doubly pertinent by the support it will give to Christian Aid in our mission to overcome global poverty."
