Don't take pot luck

It's amazing the difference the right plant in a pot or container can make to a bare doorstep, patio or any area of hard landscaping. Plants can do more than simply soften the look of concrete, paving or decking.

A small cluster of two or three containers or pots, with plants which

work well together, can completely alter a hard landscaped area.

Varieties of the dwarf mountain pine (Pinus mugo) provide excellent options for planting in pots and containers.

Being evergreen, the plants bring the bonus of colour and structure throughout the year. Dwarf mountain pines are fully hardy and generally do well in most soils. Site them in a sunny position.

The slow-growing dwarf varieties require little maintenance.

Pinus mugo 'Carsten's Wintergold'

A really beautiful dwarf with rich deep golden-yellow winter foliage. Bun shaped, 18ins in 10 years. (45cm)

Pinus mugo 'Corley's Mat'

A very low-growing form of flat-topped appearance, with thick shoots. Bright mid-green foliage. 12ins high x 3ft spread in 10 years. (1m)

Pinus mugo 'Gnom'

As for straight mugo except perhaps less growing vigour at 2ft in 10 years. (60cm)

Pinus mugo 'Humpy'

A delightful little bush, with short dark green needles. Takes on a dense, rounded shape. Slow start, at 12ins in 10 years. (30cm)

Pinus mugo 'Mops'

A neat globular form with a dark green appearance, making a fine specimen approx. 2ft in 10 years. (60cm)

Pinus mugo 'Mops Midget'

Simply a more compact version of the 'Mops' but growing into a bun shaped bush 15 ins in 10 years. (40cm)

Pinus mugo 'Ophir'

Another beautiful specimen conifer, turning from green to a golden colour in winter, growing approx. 2ft in 10 years. (60cm)

An additional variety for the gold collection, as it turns golden-yellow as the season ends. 2.5ft high in 10 years. (75cm)

Pinus mugo 'Winter Sun'

Variety possibly as above being same.

Pinus mugo 'Zundert'

Excellent winter colour adding to the attractive mugo collection of brilliant yellow .
