Hidden Gem:The Red Pepper Deli

QUICHES and cakes with mostly organic ingredients and made on the premises make this café deli worth a detour from Ilkley town centre or the nearby trunk road.

In addition to a familiar range of bespoke oils, tinned and dry goods and store shelf staples with provenance and interesting labels, it sells organic vegetables and helps make this western outpost of Ilkley a self-contained shopping enclave, should they be able to resist the one-stop, one-shop lure of the supermarket.

Locals drop in for a fresh croissant (75p) and coffee (from 1.10), rather than the traditional tea-shop snacks of toasted teacake or toast, which are not on the menu. Inside, there is one table and further seating along the window bar. This is the quiet end of town, so the ambience is relaxed.

Sustaining Red Pepper specialities include a crumble slice of figs, pear and apple, or a moist carrot and apple cake (each at 1). The soup, a different choice daily, is a reasonable 2.25 and on the day of the visit was a thick broth of organic carrot and coriander – a recipe which has replaced tomato soup as the nation's favourite. Individual savoury and fruit pies are supplied by an artisan cook near Harrogate and the bread is produced in Otley. A goat cheese, pumpkin and spinach tart sampled was first rate. Opening times: from 9am Tuesday to Saturday.

At the time of writing it was closing around 3pm, on a temporary basis. Ring to check.
