Ideal recipe for growing your own vegetables
Inspiration for growing your own veg continues into harvest time at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, in Harrogate, from 10am-4pm on Monday, August 18, with another Grow Your Own Veg day, sponsored by NS&I.
The focus for the day is on storing and cooking this season's produce, as well as planting and sowing for autumn/winter vegetables. Themed walks, talks and demonstrations will enhance your knowledge and encourage anyone who wants to grow their own.
Local veg grower and broadcaster Joe Maiden will be manning the advisory stand in the Plant Centre, along with the expert RHS gardeners, from 11am-4pm. Visitors can come and seek advice on any aspect of veg growing and harvesting.
Chef Andrew Wood, from the Vegetarian Society, will be demonstrating recipes for some of the more unusual vegetables, including hot dishes, soups and salads.
"This is the perfect time of year to experiment with different ways of using the vegetables and leaves that you harvest from the garden – children (and adults) are encouraged to try out new vegetables as they see them move from the garden to the table in a variety of different ways," says Alison Mundie, RHS kitchen gardener.
"There will be something for everyone; for example, children can plant up herb pots and try out the vegetable stew quiz, while adults can join the kitchen garden walks to find out how to harvest and store the latest crops."
Some of the highlights include mini walks around the kitchen garden – learn what's in season, what you can plant now, and advice on companion planting. Talks will include Herbal Harvest, Pick of the Plot, Shoots, Leaves and Roots, plus Grow Something Different, with Jane Atkinson, of the Bradford Community Environment Project, and Victorian Vegetables Then and Now, with Sue Hoy, from Normanby Hall, Lincolnshire.
All of the day's activities and talks are free of charge (garden entrance fee applies).
