Listen now: Roger McGough interviewed and in performance

Listen online: An exclusive interview with poet Roger McGough and excerpts from his performance at the 2009 Ilkley Literature Festival.

In the Sixties, Roger McGough was an essential component of the beat-inspired Liverpool Poets movement, and also a member of The Scaffold, alongside Paul McCartney's brother Mike.

McGough was one of the writers of the Beatles movie Yellow Submarine and in a career spanning nearly half a century has become of the country's most published poets.

In this programme, he is in conversation with the Yorkshire Post's Digital Editor David Behrens, and in performance at the King's Hall, Ilkley.

Roger McGough's latest work is That Awkward Age. At that awkward age now between birth and death, he addresses Alzheimer's and wrestles with mortality. He resolves (and fails) to live every day as if it were his last, joins the Foreign Legion, jives in Macca's trousers, shares the pain of Mr Sappho and Lord Godiva and plans a prison break.

That Awkward Age, 12.99, is published by Viking, ISBN: 0670918229.
