On the grapevine

Just the title of Victoria Moore's book, How to Drink, makes you stop and think. Surely everyone knows how to drink?

But Victoria, who writes the wine column for The Guardian, has investigated all kinds of drinks. It starts with the presumption that everyone needs to drink something and whether you like tea, coffee, cocktails or sake there is information, about origins, ingredients and mixers. There are stories about friends who always carry the exact recipe for their favourite cocktail, in case the barman doesn't know; there are suggestions for serving shots of Sauvignon Blanc with oysters. There is even mention of a Yorkshire Post wine writer who describes the colour of some ros as "granny's underwear". Not so much a reference book about drink but more of a book to read in the garden – accompanied by your favourite drink.

How to Drink, Granta, 15.99.
