On the grapevine

A good lunchtime fizz is a sparkling wine with a splash of cassis to add fruit and a delightful pink colour.

I often find that my bottle of cassis loses its flavour and colour between events so I have taken to using the pure fruit cordials from Pixley Berries. Made from pure fruit, not concentrate, they taste as if you have gathered the fruit from your own garden. My favourite is the blackcurrant and Scottish raspberry version, but you only need a few drops in a glass for the right effect. The advantage of these over cassis is that you can also use the same cordial for your guests who are driving, topping the glass up with tonic, sparkling apple juice or ginger beer. Pixley Berries cordials are available at health food stores and Waitrose, and the price drops from 3.19 to 2.39 for 50cl on July 1 until August 18.

Recession victims

The recession has claimed Playford Ros wine merchants, based in Thirsk and their assets have been taken over by House of Townend of Hull.

Anyone who has recently bought wine from Playford Ros but who has not yet taken delivery, such as en primeur stocks, should contact Jane Crook at House of Townend (01482 586582). If the wine has been stored by Playford with your name on it then it should be safe from the administrators.
