Question and Answer

This is the first full year I have had a compost bin, but things are not going well – the contents have gone slimy and smelly. What am I doing wrong?

There are several reasons why your bin isn't working well, but the most likely is the absence of air. This will cause the composting micro-organisms to stop working; they will be replaced by another type that work without air. The result is a nasty smell.

Fork over the contents of the bin to re-introduce air, and reduce the amount of kitchen waste and grass clippings you are composting. The best way is to layer the bin – a layer of grass clippings, a layer of soil or compost, a layer of kitchen waste, a layer of soil, a layer of garden waste, etc. Finding the right balance is the key.
