Roy Hattersley was born in 1932 into a Labour family. Hiw mother, Enid, was a Sheffield councillor who became Lord Mayor of the city.
After university he too ascended to City Hall before eventually being selected to fight for Birmingham Sparkbrook in the 1964 election. It was a seat he was to hold for the next eight terms.
He held various ministerial posts in the later 1960s and 1970s, including a Foreign Office brief for Harold Wilson. Eventually he made it into the Cabinet as Consumer Protection Secretary under James Callaghan.
In the Eighties, in opposition, he became deputy leader of the party to Neil Kinnock.
A lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter, he is the author of 15 books as well as numerous columns for The Guardian, The Spectator, Punch and others.
