Ten years of branching out
Wild about woods, or just partial to trees? Been to visit the arboretum at Castle Howard, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew's northern reserve for many valuable tree species? You should, and this year you could wish it a happy tenth birthday because that's how long it's been open to the public. Until the end of November, you'll be welcome any day between 10am and 6pm.
And just to add the icing on the cake, the arboretum is planning what it hopes will be the inaugural "Wild About Wood" Festival which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13. The event aims to inspire, educate and entertain people of all ages, with things like chainsaw sculpting, heavy-horse logging, coracle making, willow weaving, and even a Viking encampment.
The arboretum's Maurag Carmichael said: "At this time of year, everywhere you look there is something thrilling to see. We would encourage people to come to the arboretum and share the beauty and tranquillity of this place."
