The 2008 season can now officially be regarded as the worst-ever season after yet another severely rain-affected Saturday pushed the number of cancelled games up to 218 – well in excess of last year's previous record of 179 abandoned or uncompleted matches.
The intervention by the weather was the 12th match day out of 21 to suffer a reduced programme and only two games appear to have been played to conclusion.

A further two matches made a start before the rain caused abandonment with all the other g
ames being victims of waterlogged conditions.

With the majority of sides receiving nine points for the abandonment, a number of issues were decided in an in-active manner. Woodhouse Grange are champions for the first time since 1997 and can head off to Monday's Lord's final of the National Village Trophy safe in the knowledge that they will be receiving the Premiership Trophy for the first time.

Hornsea will make their first appearance in the Premier Division in 2009 as they are now certain of promotion. They require eight points from their final game to clinch the title and the fixture compiler can take some credit as the crunch game sees them entertain second placed Beverley Town who need 11 points to make certain of promotion.

In Division Two, leaders Fenner and Ripon are both promoted but the divisional honours are to be decided on the final day.

Fenner will go into their final game with a six-point lead but face a testing session away to third-placed Beverley Town II. Ripon's trip seems to be a less threatening affair at Dringhouses. Duncombe Park and Bolton Percy are now heading into Division Three which is one of the most closely- fought, with three teams all in with a chance of grabbing the silverware.

League newcomers Hull & YPI are six points ahead of Londesbrough Park with New Earswick a further point behind.

With four teams to be relegated, Acomb II, Stillington and Sheriff Hutton Bridge II are certain to make the drop.

The relegation of Stillington into Division 4 will prevent the promotion of their second team from 5B should they confirm their runners-up spotin their closing game.

Play was possible in only one Premier Division game, with the clash between Easingwold and Thirsk was reduced to 38 overs.

Cousins Stephen Piercy and Martin Piercy opened for Easinglwold and reached 47 before the latter fell for 24. Paul Skilbeck then blasted 22 off seven balls including two successive sixes.

Dave Towse claimed 5-36 to restrict Easiongwold to 132-8. When Thirsk replied, they could only reach 13-1 when the rains came after five overs.

One of the two games to be completed saw relegation- threatened Sheriff Hutton gain a valuable 17 points in a closely- fought draw with Thorp Arch.

Andy Hawkswell's 56 was the day's top score while Andy Griffith (47) and Will Bartlett (36) helped Thorp Arch reach a total of 172-9.

Successful bowlers for Sheriff were Simon Thornton with 4-37 and Joel Wilford 3-43. Ed Taylor then fronted the reply in making 43 but Giles Toogood claimed
3-34 to restrict Sheriff to 158-8.

The only other completed game saw Pickering II run out winners by 8 wickets when they defeated Stamford Bridge II to return to the top of Division 4A.

Stamford's 110-6 had runs from Ian Fraser 33 and Nick Porteous 26 with Ady Boyes taking 3 for 31. Pickering were then taken to a conclusive victory by Ed Rounthwaite 34 and Rob Aconley who made 41 not out.

The only other game to make a start was in Division 2 where Tadcaster Magnet made 10-0 at Fenner in the 4.4 overs that were squeezed in.
