WORK on a long-awaited £1.2m redevelopment of Skipton bus station will begin next month.
The current bus station site on Keighley Road in Skipton will close for the redevelopment.

North Yorkshire County Council, together with Craven District Council, which owns the site, are behind the scheme.

To ensure the safety of passengers, op
erators and the general public the bus station and car park are to be closed throughout the 16-week contract period which begins on September 8.

Arrangements are being made to minimise disruption.

Key features of the new site include:

Eight bus stands, including provision for community transport vehicles and National Express coaches;

Covered waiting facilities with seating;

New toilet facilities;

Improved CCTV;

Dedicated rank area for 13 taxis;

Car parking including designated disabled bays.

Clare Wood, executive member for passenger transport at North Yorkshire County Council said: ''The redeveloped site will greatly improve the travelling experience for bus passengers in Skipton and its surrounding towns and villages.''

Coun David Crawford, of Craven District Council said: "There will naturally be some disruption as the work progresses but I'm sure this will be kept to a minimum. Such an investment will pay dividends, not just to Skipton, but the wider area beyond and I look forward to the work being completed."
