Binmen in city centre protest

Dustbin workers in Leeds held demonstrations outside Leeds Civic Hall yesterday as they staged a third day of industrial action.
Refuse and street cleaning workers staged a walkout for the third consecutive week in a row over new pay structures.
Some residents have complained that their bins have not been emptied for three weeks, causing foul smells and problems with vermin.
The dispute was sparked by a new pay and grading structure the council wants to introduce to meet equal pay legislation. As a result, many staff will receive wage increases or see no change. But some will see their salary cut.
The council says the union's demands would leave council tax payers with a hefty bill.
Further action has not been ruled out.
