Those still in the dark about the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool can pick a day out with a difference in one of Yorkshire's biggest forests.
Nature lovers are being offered a close encounter with weird organisms like saffron milk cap, wood woolly foot and even plums and custard – the country names of colourful fungi sprouting early in North Yorkshire woods. Last year's growth was disappointing in spite of the record rainfall. But this autumn forest rangers report that Mother Nature is back on track and to celebrate the harvest the Forestry Commission is staging its popular fungi walks through 8,600-acre Dalby Forest, near Pickering. A family forage for adults with children takes place on Saturday September 20. Grown ups and the over 12s can enjoy two treks on Sunday October 5.
Booking is required on 01751 472771.
