BUILDING work was brought to a halt at nearly half the construction sites in Hull this week after inspectors said they failed to meet safety standards.
One of the biggest causes of concern was unsafe scaffolding. The way heavy materials were handled was also a cause for concern.
More than a dozen prohibition notices were issued and a small number of companies may now face prosecution.
In total 56 sites were visited over Tuesday and Wednesday, stopping work at 24 sites where workers were considered to be at risk of serious, if not fatal, injuries.
It follows a similar initiative in North and North East Lincolnshire where inspectors halted work at 17 sites.
