A YOUNG chef has beaten off more than 4,000 competitors to take the Rotary Young Chef of the Year title in London.
Tom Souter, 16, from Ryedale claims it was The Black Swan at Helmsley, where his mother, Alison works, that sparked his passion for cooking. She is now manager of the Black Swan's tea room and patisserie.
Tom won with a goat's cheese and langoustine salad, duck "three ways" using the leg, breast and liver, and a rhubarb and vanilla pot with ginger biscuits.
His prize includes a trip to Italy to see the olive harvest and work experience with a sous chef at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant in London.
