A BABY and three other children were rescued after an unattended chip pan caught fire at a house in Bradford.
A man who was with the siblings managed to break a large window on the ground floor of the house and pass two of the children, who were aged up to seven, to safety.
Firefighters were called to the semi-detached home in Lower Rushton Road, Thornbur
y, just before midnight on Friday. They rescued the seven-month-old boy from a pram in the living room and the seven-year-old from an upstairs bedroom.
The baby was initially in a critical condition after being taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary with the three other children. He was later described as "stable".
Smoke was pouring from the house, which did not have smoke detectors fitted, when firefighters arrived.
Fire investigation officer Nigel Craven said: "They were really lucky to get out on this occasion but having a smoke alarm fitted could have meant the difference between life and death.
"If a smoke detector had been fitted they would have known about the fire and been able to get out of the property earlier."
He praised the man, who quickly became disorientated by the smoke, for managing to pass two of the children to safety.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will fit smoke detectors free of charge and can be contacted on 0800 5874536.
