WORK has started on surveying Bradford's Odeon cinema ahead of a controversial planning application to develop the site.
The work includes an asbestos survey with a "significant risk of asbestos" in 37 areas inside the building. The work is expected to take up to three months.
Plans for the 77-year-old building were put on hold while yet another bid to have it listed was considered. The former theatre and bingo hall, which opened in 1930, has been ruled not to be of sufficient architectural interest to merit saving six times.
The £55m New Victoria Place scheme for offices, apartments and a hotel requires its demolition.
The Bradford Odeon Rescue Group has put forward its own scheme, with a 132-bed hotel, car park, nightclub and auditorium.
