A Council chief is confident a multi-million-pound shopping centre will be built in spite of work being halted on the city centre site.
But the council remained tight-lipped about whether an agreement it has with the centre's developers, Westfield, includes a completion date.
Chief executive of Bradford Council Tony Reeves said: "We are working very closely with Westfield and we a
re confident that even in a time when many economies are contracting, retailers will still want to invest in the Broadway development.
"Bradford is undergoing massive regeneration and has a growing population, investor confidence in our city is strong.
"Westfield have made very good progress on site and have already invested millions of pounds into it."
The Yorkshire Post revealed yesterday that work had stopped on the £340m development – the latest in a series of major building projects to be hit by delays – but Westfield insisted the stoppage was "temporary" until retail tenants have been found.
Executive director, Environment, for Yorkshire Forward Jan Anderson said the regional development agency backed the council's view. "The Broadway scheme is going through the normal stages of a development of this nature, and in the current economic climate pre-lets are very important.
"There has been significant interest in the Broadway scheme from retailers, and Yorkshire Forward will continue to support Bradford Council and Westfield in growing interest in the scheme."
Westfield said that the next stage will be the start of construction including structural steelwork which it wants to start "as soon as possible".
