PLANS to offer free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s in Calderdale will be discussed by the cabinet next Monday.

The council says a Government grant of £57,000 would be available to support the scheme to introduce free swimming to the over 60s but the change could cost it £19,000 in 2009/10 and £21,000 if introduced next April.

There are no details of grants available at present for free swimming for under 16s and the estimated cost without the grant could be in the region of £126,000.

Cabinet member for community services Coun Amanda Byrne said: "If introduced it would help the council to meet one of our key priorities to help develop healthier communities in Calderdale.

"However despite the scheme being something we would support, it would leave us with a financial shortfall, and we will need to weigh up the long term benefits especially as Government funding is only in place for two years."
