CALDERDALE Council is to buy Todmorden Health Centre as part of its plan to regenerate the town centre.

The centre is on Rose Street but from March next year will be moving to a new building on Halifax Road. This will free up the existing Calderdale Primary Care Trust building for redevelopment.

The council is already working with the local communit
y to modernise the town centre. A project management board, made up of local representatives and councillors, has been created and a development brief is being prepared.

It will look at opportunities to breathe new life into several sites including Tipside, the former Abraham Ormerod Centre and former Netto.

The Rose Street site is surrounded by council-owned land and will provide a major redevelopment opportunity for developers. The council says a number of options to fund the purchase are being considered.

Cabinet member, Coun David Kirton, said: "This site is crucial to the regeneration of Todmorden town centre. The purchase of this building will be critical to the delivery of the main aims of the development brief which is currently being drawn up.

"Once the brief has been produced it will go out to consultation before coming back to the project board and then cabinet.''
