Horse paintings coming home

PAINTINGS by one of Britain's most famous equine artists are going on display in the region and some will be returning to the country estate where they were originally produced.
George Stubbs is well known for his studies of horses, and a new exhibition at the Harley Gallery, near Worksop, includes several of his works, including some that have never been seen in public before.
Several of the pictures were painted on the Welbeck Estate, which is now home to the Harley Gallery. Two are set at nearby Creswell Crags and are on loan for the exhibition from the Tate Gallery in London.
Stubbs was invited to the estate several times by its owner, the third Duke of Portland, William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, to paint portraits of himself, his brother and several of the family's horses.
The exhibition, Horses and Landscapes: George Stubbs at Welbeck, opens on Saturday and runs until December 21. The gallery is on the A60 south of Worksop and admission is free.
