SIR NORMAN Adsetts has been awarded the Campion Medal – the highest honour in the Jesuit order – for his contribution to two independent schools in Sheffield.
After 10 years' service Sir Norman is retiring as chairman of the governors at Mount St Mary's College in Spinkhill and its preparatory school, Barlborough Hall, which are both Catholic schools in the Jesuit tradition.
To mark the retirement he wa
s presented with the Campion Medal by Father Michael Holman, the Provincial of the British Jesuits.
A spokesman for Mount St Mary's College said: "During Sir Norman's tenureship the schools have enjoyed renewed success.
"Many parents are drawn to the schools for their emphasis on developing the whole person, not just academically but socially, spiritually and physically.
"Sir Norman helped to bring to fruition many projects, including the installation of an international standard athletics facility."
His successor is Jim Kelly, who was headteacher of All Saints' School, Sheffield, for 28 years.
Sir Norman, knighted in 1999 for his services to the community, grew up in Sheffield. He was chairman of the family-founded company Sheffield Insulating, later renamed SIG, and in 1996 became honorary life president.
Among many other roles he has been chairman of the Assoc-iation for the Conservation of Energy's governing council, Shef-field Hallam University govern-ors and Sheffield Theatres Trust.
