Plans to build hundreds of houses and flats in the Lakeside area of Doncaster are expected to be approved by planning councillors at a meeting tomorrow.
The scheme, drawn up by housebuilder David Wilson Homes, includes a development of 308 flats on a piece of land on the eastern bank of the lake which was fiercely opposed three years ago.
A successful legal challenge was mounted by local residents
who said that the new buildings, up to four storeys in height, would deprive them of the lake views they enjoy.
But now the company has resubmitted the contentious plans and says it has redrawn the blueprint to ensure that two- storey homes are built in areas where flats would obscure the lake.
Also on the agenda will be
an application for a mixture of 258 houses and flats on a
site fronting on to Gilwice Way and Lakeside Boulevard and
a scheme that would see 194 houses built on land close to Hall Cross School's playing fields.
According to papers to be presented to the council's planning committee, people have already contacted the authority to voice their opposition to the developments being approved.
Protests about the idea include traffic problems with residents saying there was already congestion, particularly at the Gliwice Way and Bawtry Road junction close to Asda. They also said the site provided a habitat for wildlife and should be kept free from development.
The application will be discussed at the planning committee meeting to be held in the Mansion House from 2pm tomorrow. It is open to the public.v
