Craven Museum and Gallery is a step closer to a makeover after councillors agreed to bid for up to £1m from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the scheme.

The museum is currently housed in Skipton Town Hall but Craven District Council hopes to extend it out at the back of the building and to upgrade the existing museum and gallery.

Coun Ken Hart, lead member for culture, said: "Skipton development proposals to create a new purpose-built museum space offers us a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a vibrant, modern museum."

The museum and gallery is in the top 25 per cent of attendance nationally with over 50,000 visitors each year.

But the displays are seen as tired and outdated and the museum needs more up-to-date interpretation using sound and film, for example. Wheelchair access is also too restricted.

The first stage of the funding application will be submitted in November and, if successful, development work will start next April. A second stage bid will be submitted in 2010.
