A BARNSLEY man was in custody on suspicion of murder last night following the death of a 26-year-old man.
Ian Stewart, of New Street, Darfield, died from a stab wound following the incident in New Street at about 10pm on Sunday. Police were alerted by an ambulance crew who were called to tend to him.
Police said there had been an "altercation" in the
street, but detectives were still investigating the full details of what happened.
Mr Stewart was pronounced dead after being taken to Barnsley Hospital. The older man, aged 31, was arrested and remained in custody last night.
A post-mortem examination carried out yesterday revealed that Mr Stewart died from a single stab wound to his chest.
A spokesman for the South Yorkshire force said: "It would appear there was an altercation between the two men and the 26-year-old sustained fatal injuries."
n Five people were released without charge last night after a day of questioning following the death of a man in Bridlington.
The man, aged 22, was taken to hospital with what is thought to be a head injury from a flat on Blackburn Avenue in the early hours of yesterday, where he died.
It appears there was a party at the address and police had been called out earlier in the evening to a disturbance. Three men and two women were arrested but Humberside Police said last night they were satisfied the death was not suspicious.
A spokesman said a post-mortem had proved inconclusive and the case had now been passed to the coroner.
