A fanfare by trumpeters of the West Yorkshire Police Band welcomed judges, coroners, magistrates and other members of the legal profession from across Yorkshire and the North East to York Minster yesterday.

Wearing robes and wigs, they walked in procession from the Assembly Rooms along Duncombe Place to the South Door of the Minster for Matins and the North Eastern Circuit Annual Service.

They were accompanied by the High Sheriffs of North, West and South Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear, together with the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, and Lady Crathorne.

During the Minster service, at which the sermon was delivered by the Bishop of Birmingham, David Urquhart, lessons were read by Chaplain to the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Les Slow and Chaplain to the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire David Christie.
