PLANS to create an "iconic" entertainment venue in Scunthorpe have moved a step closer after North Lincolnshire Council said it was inviting submissions for the redesign of the historic Baths Hall.
Development work has already begun at the site in Doncaster Road and the authority said it is now ready to finalise plans for its £15m transformation.
The former public swimming pool, which had a dual role as a music venue, will retain many origin
al features but will be overhauled to create what the council said would rival any facility on the north bank.
Council leader Mark Kirk said: "This marks a major step forward in ambitious plans to give North Lincolnshire the most modern venue either side of the Humber. The council is looking for organisations to help make our visions of this fantastic entertainment venue a reality.
"The new venue will provide an iconic statement of the council's commitment to the entertainment and performance art in North Lincolnshire."
The original 1931 frontage of the hall, including the former entrance and office, will be the only parts of the building to remain with everything else being rebuilt.
A former youth centre and laundry at the site have been pulled down, which required the removal of asbestos. Work had also been underway to clear chemicals from the site, which was built on a former gas works.
Although the pool was last used in 1982 the hall operated as a music venue until August 2006. Campaigns were launched to keep it open but the venue was failing to attract big enough audiences to remain viable.
The hall has played host to countless local bands over the years, as well as rock legends the Who, the Kinks, the Hollies and the Animals.
