A NEW £220m cancer centre was given a royal seal of approval yesterday as Princess Anne declared the facility officially open.
The Princess Royal visited the St James's Institute of Oncology in the new Bexley Wing at St James's Hospital in Leeds.
She met patients and staff and toured the impressive new facilities, which it is hoped will improve cancer survival rates.
The Bexley Wing opened to patients at Christmas and is one of the largest specialist cancer treatment centres in Europe, with 1,600 staff and 350 in-patient beds.
Equipment includes three CT scanners, two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and 10 linear accelerators to deliver radiotherapy treatment.
The Princess also visited Calderdale to see examples of enterprise in the area.
Her day included a tour around the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, Hopwood Lane, Halifax, and a visit to see cheesemakers David and Robyn Heap, at Crow Hill End Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby Bridge.
