Environment campaigners in a South Yorkshire town have launched a drive to persuade people to make their own shopping bags and abandon the hated plastic carrier.

A workshop is planned in Penistone, near Barnsley, which will give locals the skills to knock up a bag out of old curtains or other materials which can be reused.

Rachel Gibbons, left, is one of the people behind the so-called Penistone Carry-A-Bag campaign, and has been busy making bags at her home in the town's Thurlstone Road. She is seen with fellow campaigner Helen Fryers.

She said the workshop would be held on Saturday, May 31, and added: "We would like to encourage local sewing enthusiasts to come along and help us create as many shopping bags as possible."
