POLICE confirmed today that a woman who claimed she had been sexually assaulted near York University had made the allegations up.
The 19-year-old woman attended York Police Station yesterday afternoon and formally withdrew the allegations.

She had claimed she was pulled into bushes and sexually assaulted as she walked along Heslington Lane from Fulford close to the university at about 9.45pm on Tuesday.

She told North Yorkshire Police detectives she managed to fight off the man and break free before running to a friend's house in the Heslington area of the city, where she raised the alarm about the bogus attack.

A force spokeswoman said: "North Yorkshire Police would like to reassure the public and local communities that the sexual assault did not take place and the investigation has now been closed."
