TV weatherman opens weekend walks and talks

TV weatherman Paul Hudson will speak about the impact of climate change on Yorkshire at an event in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this weekend.
The public consultation awareness day has been organised by the Harrogate and District Biodiversity Action Partnership at Bewerley Park Outdoor Centre, near Pateley Bridge.

The programme of walks, talks, demonstrations and presentations, which con
tinue throughout Saturday and Sunday, will be opened by Mr Hudson at 10.30am on Saturday and he will speak at 11am.

From 9.30am to 10.15am Ripon Moth Trappers and Brian Derbyshire, of Harrogate Naturalists, will display moths and small mammals trapped overnight before they are released unharmed.

Harrogate Council's rural strategy officer, Dan McAndrew, will give an introduction to the district's Biodiversity Action Plan at 11.45am on Saturday.

The plan is intended to protect all the district's wildlife – not just rare species of animals and plants, but the entire spectrum of life.

During Saturday afternoon there will be talks on the Swale and Ure Washlands Project, Rossett nature reserve and Nidderdale tree wardens. Family events from 1.30pm to 4.30pm will include pond dipping and a mini-beast hunt.Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

There will be a series of walks on both days, but places are limited and they must be booked by contacting Mr McAndrew in advance on 01423 556594 or on Saturday at Bewerley Park.

Nidderdale AONB ranger Colin Slator will lead a Saturday evening bird walk. Meet at Fewston car park off the A59 at Blubberhouses at 7pm. North Yorkshire Bat Group will lead a talk and walk at Bewerley Park Outdoor Centre at 8.15pm.

On Sunday morning the walks are: Greenhow – wildlife, geology and industry led by geologist Adrian Kidd and naturalist Rob Adams; Ancient Woodland – management and wildlife led by Brian Wood and Barry Slaymaker; Lower Nidderdale – landscape history and wildlife led by Richard Muir.

In the afternoon Colin Slator will talk about Issues of Moorland Management on a walk in the Dallowgill area; a wheelchair accessible walk – Swinsty Reservoir and its wildlife – will be led by Neville Bowland and David Shaftoe; and Upland Heritage and Wildlife will be led from Stean in Upper Nidderdale by Nigel Heptinstall.
