PLANS for the regeneration of what was one of Sheffield's most run down council estates have now been drawn up, after a competition to find the best architect for the job.
Prewett Bizley has been selected as the winning architect for the redevelopment of the Skye Edge site, which sits on a hillside overlooking the city centre.
The company was chosen by a panel of judges as part of a Europe-wide competition, Europan 9, which attracts entries from some of the best young architects across the Continent.
It is now drawing up plans for about 140 new houses on the site as well as a distinctive promenade. Public consultation on the plans will take place this summer.
Karl Tupling, director of housing at Sheffield Council, said: "We want to increase the number of high-quality homes in Sheffield that meet the needs of the community.
"We look forward to working with the architects and local people on the plans for Skye Edge."
Peter Maxwell, head of Better Public Buildings at Cabe, the Government's adviser on architecture, urban design and public space, said Prewett Bizley's plans for Skye Edge set "a high standard for housing".
He said: "Their proposal for Skye Edge is a distinctive scheme and the judges were
particularly impressed by the promenade, which provides well-designed public space which links existing amenities, such as the community centre, to the park with fantastic views across the city."
