John McLaughlin: Floating Point (Abstract Logix) (£12.99)

McLaughlin has a long and honourable history of fusing disparate genres, and this new release finds him in fine, adventurous form delivering a CD that bristles with energy and new ideas. His fascination with Indian music is still at the heart of ever
ything, but he pushes it into inventive jazz-rock territory with the help of a fine supporting cast, notably keyboard player Louiz Banks and saxophonist George Brooks. The performances have a terrific zest about them, and there is some blistering solo work, not least from McLaughlin himself. AV

Milt Jackson/Wes Montgomery: Bags Meets Wes (Riverside) (£8.99)

Here's a reissued classic from another masterful jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery, who teamed up with vibes supremo Milt Jackson for this 1961 session. Both men were steeped in the blues, and first-rate improvisers. Teamed with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Philly Joe Jones, they made magical music. Performances like Stablemates, SKJK and Delilah have lost none of their power, Montgomery's jaw-dropping guitar lines and Jackson's glittering solos sounding as fresh as if they were recorded yesterday. AV

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring/Firebird RCO Live RCO 08002 (£11.99)

Just when you thought recorded sound couldn't get any better, up pop the Concertgebouw Orchestra and their engineers in a high-definition spectacular that reaches a new level of excellence. Mariss Jansons directs a vividly-coloured and aggressive Rite of Spring that will test your speakers, the brass in stunning form and the percussion adding the tingle factor. Recorded in the famous Amsterdam concert hall, he adds the 1919 suite from the Firebird ballet, the disc is in compatible surround sound or normal stereo format. DD

Glazunov: Ballet Suite/Characteristic Suite Melodyia MEL CD 10 00160 (£11.99)

Glazunov's music is making a big comeback, his works that once sank into oblivion here regenerated by the outstanding playing of the USSR Symphony under the legendary Evgeni Svetlanov. The Ballet Suite is packed with attractive melody as we move through eight different dances from a Waltz to a vivacious Polonaise. Much in the same mood, the Characteristic Suite is a story book in music that both charms and excites. The 1990 sound is excellent, but Melodyia's accompanying booklet is a disgrace. DD
