After a long absence, the Hallé returns to Harrogate on Sunday evening with charismatic conductor, Mark Elder, for the opening Gala Concert in the gorgeously restored Royal Hall.
The concert features Sheffield-born pianist Benjamin Frith as the soloist in Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.

Former winner of the prestigious Arthur Rubinstein Masters Piano Competition in Israel, Frith has since led a hectic concert and recording career, while still finding time to follow his passion for chamber music as a member of the critically acclaimed Gould Piano Trio.

The remainder of the programme contains music long associated with the orchestra: Wagner's overture to the opera, Die Meistersingers and Elgar's colourful Enigma Variations.

The following night it is the turn of Manchester Camerata who fittingly bring with them the last winner of the Leeds Conductors' Competition, Alexander Shelley, in a concert that includes Beethoven's Eighth Symphony and Mozart's overture to the comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro.

The soloist in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto is Michael Roll, the first winner of
the Leeds International
Piano Competition in 1963, and now very much a father figure among our keyboard virtuosos.

Beloved Clara, the last of the three celebratory events, relates in words and music the story of the turmoils and passions in the love affair of Clara and Robert Schumann as related in their diaries and letters. This staged presentation stars Edward Fox and Joanna David as the Schumanns, with the pianist, Lucy Parham, playing music they both composed.

Harrogate Royal Hall, Apr 27-29, 01423 537230.
